Renfe is carrying out a complete renewal of its fleet, both Cercanías, and Media Distancia trains and Alta Velocidad. The result should be a more modern, efficient, and sustainable fleet that responds to customer needs.
After the Spanish government approved an €879.3 million increase in the debt limit for the current financial year in a bid to boost public transport, Renfe has begun to talk with manufacturers. Contracts are expected to be signed in the coming weeks.
Renfe wants to exercise the option to purchase 101 trains by the end of this year. Specifically, it wants to buy 69 Cercanías high-capacity trains (manufactured by Stadler and Alstom) and 32 Media Distancia trains (manufactured by CAF).
As part of the overall fleet renewal plan in which four manufacturers are participating, 519 new Alta Velocidad, Cercanías, Media Distancia, and Ancho Métrico trains, as well as Alta Velocidad and Mercancías locomotives, should be delivered. The estimated investment is €5.4 billion.
The new trains will not only be modern and highly reliable but will also fulfill the sustainability parameters to which Renfe has committed itself: 80% of the energy in its trains is electric and comes from 100% renewable sources.
