Adif, the Spanish company responsible for managing railway infrastructures, is making progress in the development of the Madrid-Vicálvaro intermodal terminal with the acquisition of three automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (A-RMG) to handle containers in loading and unloading activities from trains to trucks and for storage. These cranes will be installed in the west intermodal module, which will be part of the remodeling works at the Madrid-Vicálvaro terminal. The new intermodal area will have four tracks for the handling of 740-meter trains and a handling capacity of 150,000 intermodal transport units per year, as well as under-gantry storage for 2,500 standardized 20-foot containers. The contract for the acquisition of the cranes has a bidding budget of 18.9 million euros and a term of 24 months.
Adif is investing more than 300 million euros in the comprehensive remodeling of the Madrid-Vicálvaro terminal. Currently, works are being taken on the railway access to the terminal. The works have involved the construction of four new tracks for the reception and dispatch of 740-meter trains and a new electronic interlocking system in the southern technical beam of the railway terminal. The first stage will be completed with a phase that will develop the west intermodal terminal (including provisional access), and the phase which includes the expansion of six new tracks and the adaptation of eight tracks to 750 meters in the southern technical installation, incorporation into the interlocking system, and technical management building.
The Madrid-Vicálvaro terminal is a strategic point on Spain's logistics map, articulating the country's goods distribution network and serving as a link between the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors. It is part of the strategic network of intermodal and logistics terminals promoted by Adif, which includes other facilities in Valencia, Barcelona, Álava, Valladolid, Sevilla, and Zaragoza.
