Stadler has completed the first EUROLIGHT DUAL locomotive for Trenitalia and transferred it to the VUZ Velim test circuit in Czechia for type testing.
At Velim, the test programme includes quasi-static anti-derailment tests as part of the approval process prior to entry into service in Italy.
The framework agreement signed in February 2023 covers maintenance for ten years, with options for two additional five-year extensions. The locomotives are intended for train rescue and passenger push-pull operations across the Italian railway network.
The EUROLIGHT DUAL is a four-axle (Bo’Bo’) bi-mode locomotive combining 3 kV DC electric traction with a 1,800 kW diesel engine. Electric output at the wheel rim is rated at 3,000 kW, starting tractive effort at 330 kN and maximum speed at 160 km/h.
The design is based on Stadler’s EUROLIGHT platform with a lightweight monocoque structure and AC/AC transmission. The locomotives are equipped with ETCS B3R2, SCMT and SSC safety systems and have an axle load of 20 tonnes, allowing operation on both main and secondary lines.
